Stop assuming the worse
“They’re too big. Too unpredictable. Too risky.” We hear it all the time when people talk about horses, and usually, it’s not based on personal experience.
At IdEAL, we work with horses every day. Yes, they’re powerful and imposing, but with calm, clear communication, they become willing partners, not threats.
And here’s the metaphor: How often do we dismiss something (or someone) as dangerous simply because it’s unfamiliar? How many opportunities do we avoid because of a perception rooted in fear, not fact? We see it in the workplace, in relationships, in personal development. Maybe that leadership course isn’t too intense, that job role isn’t out of reach, that conversation we’ve put off for too long isn’t really that difficult. Horses remind us that what looks intimidating might be transformative, once we stop assuming the worse and start engaging with the actual facts.
Service providers need to listen to everyone
If Henry Ford had asked people what they wanted, they’d have said faster horses. That quote hits hard when we’re asked to shape services based on “shared experiences”, but only from those who can engage with the process.
What about the voices we don’t hear? The ones silenced by anxiety, poverty, disability, or trauma? If we only listen to those already inside the room, we risk designing for comfort, not inclusion. That’s not innovation, it’s bias in action.
Real progress means imagining beyond the feedback loop. It means asking not just who is speaking, but who isn’t and why. Because the most transformative ideas often come from those who’ve been left out, not those already in.
Let’s stop asking for faster horses. Let’s start building what’s truly needed.
Consultancy or Coaching? Sometimes the answer is both.
As we head into a new year, it’s worth reflecting on the difference between consultancy and coaching, and why choosing the right approach can make all the difference.
Consultancy offers expert advice, strategic insight, and practical solutions. It’s ideal when you need clarity, direction, or external expertise to move forward.
Coaching, on the other hand, helps individuals or teams unlock their own potential through reflection, questioning, and goal setting. It builds confidence, ownership, and long-term capacity.
Depending on your circumstances, one may be more appropriate, or a blend of both might be the key to real transformation.
In the New Year, IdEAL will begin to formally offer coaching and consultancy services for VCFSE organisations and funders, alongside all our existing equine-assisted learning activities. Whether you’re navigating funding challenges, developing inclusive wellbeing projects, or seeking strategic clarity, we’re here to support your journey with insight and empathy.
