We’re branching out!
Sunset Farm has around half a mile of mature hedgerow that requires laying to improve its ability to contain and protect our horses. Hedge-laying is a historic method, that invigorates growth, so gaps in the hedge fill up and the hedge looks younger and fresher. Machines never have quite the same effect and can actually harm the hedgerow. Our Hedgerow Heroes Initiative, which will take place in November and December will help to educate volunteers on hedge-laying and wildlife hedge surveys, and offer talks and provided material to illustrate hedgerow management best practices.
Hedgerows play an enormously important role in the health and diversity of our land, our wildlife and even our climate. Not only are they beautiful, with shifting seasonal colours, but they also provide homes and corridors for wildlife. And all the while they help tackle the climate crisis by capturing carbon from the air and storing it in plants, slowing climate change.
